A New Look for a New Office Tenant

Outside photo of the jobsite location: Kerndt Brothers Bank. Before photo of the old, thick wallpaper to be removed. Before photo of the crew getting started on wall paper removal.

Kerndt Brothers Bank at 600 Boyson Rd. NE, in Cedar Rapids had a new tenant for their upstairs offices who wanted to renovate three areas by switching from wallpaper to painted walls.

So, the first thing to do was to remove all of the wallpaper.

Tearing Down the Thick Wallpaper

Photo of a whole corner of wall paper removal being started. Another photo of the interim process of removing the wallpaper. Wideshot of the workspace in the large office as the wall paper is being removed.

The wallpaper used in the bank was of a commercial grade, so it came off in two layers.

We used paper ligers to produce small pinholes in the surface of the wallpaper at first, then let the steamers do all the hardwork breaking down the glue.

The paper could then be more-or-less easily peeled off, and we scraped or dabbed off a majority of the remaining residue.

Prepping the Walls to be Primed

A wide photo of a the large office where the walls are being prepared for priming. Photo of Scott rolling a sealant over the rough part of a wall in the office.

A product called Gardz by Zinsser was applied to the surface of the wall after the wallpaper was removed.

This helped with the rough areas to pin down the flayed edges of the wallpaper remnants that were stuck in the cracks.

Revealing the Imperfections in the Walls

Photo of freshly painted walls and trouble-spots that needed more work done.

After the latex primer was applied, the imperfections in the walls' surfaces were a lot easier to see.

At this point, the spots that needed work got mudded and sanded.

Adjacent Areas That Also Got Done

A photo of the inner-hallway of the main office room that was add-on arrangement. An after shot of the small office with a fresh coat of paint. An after shot off the small office's beautiful newly painted walls. One last photo of the small office looking sharp with its freshly painted walls.

The big room also included a large hallway, as well as a smaller room.

The small room only had to be painted since there was no wallpaper there.

A Couple of Additions to the Job

Nice lil' photo looking into the kitchen of the main big office. Photo of the kitchen sink area that was added on at the end of the contract. Photo of Scott checking out another office to add onto the contract. A shot of the back office add-on with the wall paper removed. One last after shot of the kitchen area in the big office.

A conference room was also included in the job, and involved the same steps as the big room in wallpaper removal, prep, repair and painting.

We started working on the conference room after the first two rooms were done; the bank also asked us to paint the little kitchen while we were at it.

One Company's Color, Another Company's Product

After photo of the bright crisp walls of the small office. Another angle in the small office looking into the bigger office -- beautiful! A wide shotr of the main office after clean-up. Another angle in the big office after the job was done and looking great.

All of the walls were given two coats of Vantage interior paint with an eggshell finish by Diamond Vogel.

The repose gray paint on the walls is actually a color the tenant liked by Sherwin Williams, (color code SW7015B).
